The first time I went to the Horniman was with my best friend and her gran; we were about 8.

We loved the torture chair!

I've recently been back a few times to draw animals; it's surprisingly quiet in the daytime in the summer. I sat for hours.

This creepy little guy is a 'merman' - they were often brought back by Victorian sailors and passed off as exotic sea creatures. Really they're just half a monkey sewed to a fish tail. Gross!

People were more gullible back then I guess.

There's a really good merman at the weird shop/museum near my house, its huge and hangs from the ceiling. Go and see it! There's an interesting man called Victor who sits there all day and you can chat to him about his creepy artefacts. I do that sometimes.

I've been looking at birds and animals for my Darwin project, which led me to Polly Morgan, an extremely talented taxidermist/artist.

She's my hero because...she makes art out of dead animals. Also because Mat Collishaw is her other half, she used to manage the Electricity Showrooms and she looks like this:

Basically when I think of taxidermy, I sort of imagine a frumpy old hag. This she is not.

So needless to say, I'm a big fan. I'm shallow. Goodbye.

Years ago my friend Emily and I went to the Natural History museum to look at animals.

After a while we got bored of this and Emily insisted on finding what she called the 'secret behind-the-scenes section of pickled animals in jars'. We didn't find anything of the sort, despite persistently pestering bemused staff about it. These jars simply didn't exist! Or so I thought...

...until i recently discovered a huge new part of the museum: The Darwin Centre.

The more I read about CocoRosie the more I fall in love with them and their strange story. They seem so obsessively inseperable that it's hard to believe they didn't speak to or see each other for so long (10 years!)

…in a bathroom in Paris we found ourselves. Steamed up windows, infinite rainy days, the kettle’s constant hiss and the weary moan of a dying ambulance summoned songs from another time…

We had split apart as sisters, abandoned one another and led completely different lives, gathering contrasting influences and tools that were unknowingly building towards the birth of CocoRosie.

Sierra began her exploration of singing with gospel and spirituals, and continued her devotion studying as an opera singer. She received severe beatings from fat divas in Rome, NY and Paris, and although she attained many accolades from the world of classical opera she felt something was missing, some thirst that opera alone could never quell…

Bianca started writing songs at nine; bad love songs, poems, stories, to do lists… kept writing…tattoos, got lost in sociolinguistics, politics, fetishes.. She began singing acapella; in the shower, on the corner, in dimly-lit squats and speakeasies. She fled to Paris on a whim.

Desperate, spontaneous, from the Paris airport, Bianca calls to say; “Can I stay a while?”

We had spent our lives on separate planets, despite the fact that we shared the same child life, and this unplanned rendezvous was like a blind date arranged by angels.

This was the first time I saw them live. The venue was perfect; a Victorian gothic church lit with candles and beams of red and blue.

Took this on my phone before it got dark. All other images aren't mine.

The Casady sisters appeared wearing (like their music) a bizzare combination of street style and storybooks, Bianca's military jacket making her the fairytale prince to Sierra's tracksuited hip hop princess.

I don't know if they always do, but they had such an odd stage presence. Sierra flung herself around the stage, flittering between instruments and wringing her hands as she sang. Bianca barely moved, swaying awkwardly behind her microphone.

It was as though they were the only two people in the room. In the world, even. Ethereal and detached, they spoke to the audience only once, to tell us that they 'don't understand English' (They do, it's their first language...)

Though they predominantly played tracks from the brand new (and brilliant) Grey Oceans, the highlight of the show for me was a beautiful reworked version 'Rainbowarriors' or perhaps this amazing cover, which did to me what the title suggests.

I keep seeing silverfish! I think they're so cute and weird.

Here are some INTERESTING FACTS:

The scientific name for the species is Lepisma saccharina, due to its tendency to eat starchy foods (like glue, paper, photos, sugar, coffee, hair, carpet or even its own moulted exoskeleton).

They can go without food for a year.

They are nocturnal and can live for as long as 8 years(!?)

"Their mating ritual involves three phases, which may last over half an hour.

In the first phase, the male and female stand face to face, their trembling antennae touching, then repeatedly back off and return to this position.

In the second phase the male runs away and the female chases him.

In the third phase the male and female stand side by side and head-to-tail, with the male vibrating his tail against the female." LOL

I went down to Down House the other day, to start off a new project about my lovely neighbour* Charles Darwin.

It was amazing, especially the recreation of Darwin's deck on The Beagle, which astounded me with a VERY LIFELIKE hologram of him sitting there playing with dead birds or something. I'm easily amused.

I learnt some INTERESTING FACTS about things like The Glutton Club and honey bees and I befriended a charming old man who worked there; he was probably excited to see a visitor under the age of 40, of which I was the only one.

I feel like a massive geek now, even more than usual.

Better photos coming...when I get them developed. I miss having a darkroom at my disposal!

*(I sometimes think I live in Victorian times...is Darwin not still alive then? Piffle I say!)

I'm currently a bit obsessed (along with plenty of others, it seems) with Ryan McGinley. I haven't made it to his 'Moon Milk' show yet but I can't wait to see it!

Anyway, I was reading an interview he did with Vice and this bit made me happy

"Do you believe in the healing power of crystals, or anything?

I think they have healing powers because they’re so beautiful. Like, the way that animals can heal. I think if something is really amazing to look at, it can heal people."

...because it's nice to know some artists appreciate things which LOOK NICE rather than having to mean something or make a statement. I believe art should make people happy because it's beautiful, not make them miserable because it's baffling!

I've always thought that. And I don't pretend to understand contemporary 'art' of the sort that makes you go 'what/why is this art? hang on, what even IS THIS!?' etc. But I usually don't like it, because most of the time it's not clever.

Like with people, art should be clever or pretty (or ideally, both) otherwise what's the point? There isn't one. I agree with McGinley; healing can come from appreciation of something or someone beautiful or talented. There's a reason they have murals and paintings in hospitals.

Well since the lovely Vivitar Ultra Wide&Slim I got on ebay last Summer had MORE THAN QUADRUPLED in price when I went to replace it (!?) I opted for a new toy camera: a waterproof one from Japan called 'Silly'.
I am yet to try it underwater, but it keeps nice and safe in my bag (I always spill things) so that's good. Here's some snaps from the first roll of film:

While recovering from swine flu and feeling terribly LOVESICK and ABANDONED (cos SOME PEOPLE are gallivanting in the USA)

I have been decorating my room!

Seeing if I can do it for under a tenner by getting crafty. Progress so far:

Chandelier - £0 (I made it with 3 wire hangers and some old jewellery. Am guna add more ribbons and stuff. Mmm flammable!)
Picture boards - 3 x £1.50 cork boards from Tesco
- £3 flowery duvet cover set (charity shop)
- FREE staple gun (stole from school)
- and all my jewellery and old postcards!

I put my pearls on Lenin, doesn't he look dashing!?
Already had him and all this other mess lying around.
Vintage sewing machine - £0 (given to me by my Dad's girlfriend's grandmother!)
Roses - £SENT TO ME BY MY AMAZING GIRLFRIEND, YEAH!

Oh and my pillow collection is growing!
The flowery ones are new, from the set I used to cover the boards. MATCHING!!

So the total so far = £7.50!

I found this in an old pack of typing paper that my grandmother gave to my mother to give to me.
It's A MYSTERY!!

(also a mystery is why my mother would give me ANYTHING, which you'll understand if you've ever met that pscyho)

I think the typewriter belonged to my uncle Ian (a bit of an oddball who I've barely met) who was trying to type a letter. Then along came Sandy/alex, ANOTHER uncle (I don't think I've ever met) who RULES OK(!) Liz is his wife. I assume they were drunk. At Christmas.
(This is another one of those thing which I find FASCINATING, but nobody else does.)

20p! Reminds me of the days when I used to play a game where I had a shop. EVERYTHING in my shop was 20p. Nobody else was allowed to play the shop game, it was MY SHOP. Go away.

Drawing Room antics

I like the Drawing Room very much as it combines two of my favourite activities: drawing and dressing up crazy.
